The Hidden Spec & Why Your Drawing Isn't Enough

The Hidden Spec & Why Your Drawing Isn’t Enough

A common misconception in optical system design is that a perfect drawing guarantees a perfect result. If you provide precise transmission and OD blocking, any high-end vendor should be able to deliver a part that just works. However, at IDEX Health & Science, we’ve seen that an optical filter can meet every single spec on a piece of paper and still cause technical issues once installed. This is the hidden cost of build-to-print sourcing: when you order a part that is technically correct but not optimal because the system logic was flawed.

A Case of Perfect Failure

We recently consulted with a customer who was certain they needed a highly complex, ultra-expensive custom filter to solve a persistent signal issue. On paper, their request seemed like it would solve the issue. However, because our team of experts believes in collaboration, we asked to see the actual ray diagram.

When our engineers looked at the full light path, they noticed something a standard vendor would have missed: a fundamental math error in the customer's setup. Their specifications were inaccurate for their physical environment, leading them to request a custom solution that wouldn't have actually solved the problem.

Expert Insight: The Consultative Catch

"A customer was asking for an incredibly difficult, custom-designed filter. But when I looked at their beam diagram, I realized their specifications weren't accurate for their environment. If they had gone to a vendor who just gave them the lowest cost for what was on the print, they would have gotten a filter that didn't work. By correcting that math error early, we saved them from an expensive mistake."

Speed Supported by Science

Optimization shouldn't be a bottleneck. Once the Hidden Spec is identified and the design is corrected, the next hurdle is the timeline. Through our Quick Ship program, we have streamlined our inventory to include hundreds of high-performance filters ready to ship within 24 hours. Often, the "corrected" spec can be met by one of our premium catalog parts, getting your project back on track instantly.

The Takeaway: We don't just build to print; we build to perform. Collaborate with us on your full light path. Our Applications Scientists are ready to review your system to ensure your specs match your physical reality.
