Article obtained from Photonics RSS Feed.

BOSTON, April 11, 2019 — Boston Dynamics has acquired Kinema Systems, a robotics startup in Silicon Valley that builds advanced robotic manipulation applications.

Kinema Pick, the startup’s initial product, joins Boston Dynamics’ recently upgraded Handle platform that addresses the logistics industry. Kinema Pick utilizes a deep-learning, 3D vision solution that is designed for depalletization of complex pallets. Pick is universal and can be integrated with any robot and vacuum gripper.

“Bringing the Kinema team into Boston Dynamics expands our perception and learning capabilities while the Pick product accelerates our entry into the logistics market,” said Boston Dynamics founder and CEO Marc Raibert. “Beyond being a powerful tool for industrial robotic arms, Kinema technology will help our mobile manipulation robots tackle a wide variety of complex real-world tasks.”

Boston Dynamics will continue to sell and support Pick for interested customers while development of the Handle platform continues. This acquisition expands Boston Dynamics’ footprint to the West Coast with plans to expand into the Bay Area. For more information, visit www.bostondynamics.com/robots.
