The second type of connection is called a true zero dead volume connection. This connection mandates that the same pieces of tubing always be used in the same orientation with the fitting. The tubing should always be placed back into the same end of the fitting it was previously in, or the tubing may not bottom out in the fitting properly. In fact, there is really no way of knowing if the two pieces of tubing are joining flushly in the center of the union, or if they are touching at all. A true zero dead volume is difficult, if not almost impossible to obtain.
